Shattock Scholar
This is my fourth, and final, summer period in Durham. I am finally about to graduate and the curtains will close on my university experience.
However, as I look forward upon the future and the post-graduate life I am about to embark on, I cannot help but think about who, and where, I was this time four years ago. I was a terrified 18-year-old, about to embark on the biggest journey of my life. However, I had a greater fear than homesickness: I was entering Durham as a working-class student who knew absolutely nothing about what university had to offer.
I vividly remember my careers advisor instructing me to apply for this scholarship. At first, I was too proud – I hated the idea of asking for help, especially because I needed it. I wasn’t going to come to Durham – I had heard the stereotypes and did not feel like it was a place for people like me. However, I vividly remember thinking one day that in order for Durham to be for people like me, people like me have to stop being afraid of the stereotypes, and actually go! That was when I set my mind on Durham, and specifically Chad’s. I have not looked back ever since.
These past four years have by far been some of the best, most challenging, and most formative of my life. I think about the person that arrived here, nervous, apprehensive, and feeling like I had to prove my place here. And I leave more confident and comfortable than I have ever been. I found a home in Chad’s which is like no other – I have learnt more here than I ever could have imagined, not just about my degree, but how to be graceful, compassionate, grateful about everything life has to offer.
This is why I am so thankful for this scholarship. I genuinely could not see a situation where I could attend Durham until my career’s advisor showed me this. It felt like a lifeline. Thank you for providing me with this incredible opportunity that have helped to give me the best four years – I will always remember and appreciate your generosity.
