Coming to Durham as a student from a lower-income background has been both exciting and, at times, challenging. Arriving in an environment where many peers come from more privileged circumstances can feel daunting, particularly when there are unspoken expectations around social life, spending, and opportunities. The bursary has helped to ease that pressure, allowing me to engage more fully in university life without the constant worry of finances. It has given me the confidence to participate, belong, and make the most of everything Durham has to offer.
Because of your support, I have been able to get involved in a wide range of activities that have shaped my experience. During freshers’ week, my friends and I tried random activities we haven’t really done before such as fencing. I’ve settled into the Chad’s football team, which has been an important outlet and a way to build friendships. I have also taken the opportunity to attend various events across Durham, like student union talks and clubbing. These experiences have enriched my time here and helped me feel a genuine sense of community. Your generosity has allowed me to thrive at Durham in ways that might not otherwise have been possible.
