Music

Whether you’re an experienced musician, someone who enjoys playing or singing for fun, or even someone who hasn’t picked up an instrument  for many years, Chad’s has a lot to offer on the musical side of college life. Music at Chad’s is open, welcoming, and varied, with opportunities running throughout the year and something to suit all interests and abilities.

In addition to the events and opportunities made available by Music Committee, the Chapel Choir also offers a range of singing and playing opportunities. More information about the Chapel Choir can be found HERE.

At the heart of Chad’s music are our un-auditioned jazz band, our vocal group Chad’s Voices, and our chamber orchestra. These ensembles are designed to be accessible and enjoyable, whether you are keen to perform regularly or simply want a relaxed musical outlet alongside your degree. There is no pressure to be perfect. Instead, enthusiasm and enjoyment are what matter most. Everything is organised by our dedicated Music Committee, who work hard to ensure that music remains an inclusive and vibrant part of college life.

Being a smaller college gives Chad’s a real advantage musically. It is easy to get involved at any level, whether you want to commit seriously to rehearsals and performances or just turn up and give something new a try. Many people join without prior experience in jazz, ensemble playing, or group singing, and quickly find a supportive environment in which to develop confidence and skills. Rehearsals are friendly and sociable, and there is a strong sense of encouragement across all groups.

Chad’s music also comes with a thriving social scene. Across the year, we host popular Wine and Jazz nights, a college music showcase that celebrates performers of all styles, and a lively cocktail night in the summer term.

For those looking to take music further, Chad’s provides an excellent stepping stone into the wider Durham University music scene. Many Chadsians are involved in university orchestras, choirs, jazz ensembles, and other societies, and details about these opportunities are readily available at the Freshers’ Fair. Durham has a strong musical reputation, and Chad’s musicians are well represented across university groups.

Above all, Chad’s music is about enjoyment, community, and trying something new. Whether you are already confident in your musical ability or simply curious to get involved, we hope you will pick something up. Sing with Chad’s Voices, join the jazz band, play in the chamber orchestra, or perform at one of our showcases. Whatever your background, you will find a warm welcome and plenty of opportunities to make music part of your time at Chad’s.
