At St Chad’s we are keen to ensure that all students are offered a range of accommodation options in order that they can select the accommodation that best suits their needs and budget. For this reason, while our accommodation charges align with those of the University, we also continue to offer ‘long let’ (including the Christmas and Easter Vacations) and ‘short let’ (term time only plus Christmas Vacation) options to all undergraduate students in addition to catered and self-catered accommodation. More information and photos of the types of rooms available at St Chad’s can be found below and here on our accommodation pages.
Options for first year undergraduates
Most first year undergraduates at St Chad’s College will share a room with one other student. Indeed, those Offer Holders who choose to list St Chad’s high on their College preference list should be aware of this and content with this arrangement. Single occupancy rooms at St Chad’s are reserved for those with medical or disability-related need only.
As a new undergraduate at St Chad’s College you have the option of:
- Fully Catered accommodation on the Bailey (term time catering only) OR
- Self-Catered accommodation at Trinity Hall (a short walk from Main College and with the option of a bolt-on part-catered package offering 7 meals per week in College)
All Trinity Hall rooms are shared with ensuites as are most of the shared rooms on the Bailey. While all Trinity Hall rooms are offered on a ‘long let’ basis, on the Bailey the option of a ‘long let’ or ‘short let’ is also offered as follows –
- Short Let – a term time contract for accommodation which also includes the Christmas Vacation. Students on this type of let will need to fully clear their room over the Easter Vacation but this does offer a more affordable option.
- Long Let – a contract for accommodation which includes term time plus both the Christmas and Easter Vacations. Students on this type of let do not need to clear their room during either vacation and can remain in residence throughout if they wish. While a little more expensive, this can be helpful for students who live a distance from Durham or who would like the convenience of not having to clear their room during the Easter Vacation.
For first year undergraduates all accommodation contracts include occupation from the Sunday before Induction Week until the Saturday after the end of Easter Term.
Accommodation charges also include energy costs and wifi. New students are asked to express a room type preference before arrival but it is important that students are aware that approximately 70 % of our first year undergraduate beds are in shared standard or shared en-suite rooms and this therefore is the most likely accommodation type for first year undergraduates.
Options for upper year undergraduates
Upper year undergraduates apply for College accommodation each year through the College Room Ballot and have the option of a ‘long’ or ‘short’ let as above. Almost all upper year undergraduates choose a single room but the option of a shared room is also available and has been taken up by a number of students in recent years.
Options for postgraduates
Each year St Chad’s is pleased to welcome up to 50 postgraduates to live in College accommodation. All postgraduates are offered a 50 week let with the College which runs from the Wednesday before Induction Week until early September of the following year.
Postgraduates have the following options –
- Fully Catered accommodation on the Bailey (term time catering only) OR
- Self-Catered accommodation at Trinity Hall (a short walk from Main College) OR
- Self-Catered accommodation in the Chad’s house on Hallgarth Street (a short walk from Main College and houses 5 students)
Furthermore, if living at Trinity Hall, postgraduates have the option of a small, medium or large room at the rates shown below. All postgraduate accommodation is offered on a single occupancy basis (there are no shared postgraduate rooms).
Catering
All catered accommodation packages are offered on the basis of 30 weeks of catering for first year undergraduates and graduating students. All other students receive 29 weeks of catering in fully catered accommodation.
